Dec. 13th

Broke a trail through the bush down the W trail today.  Lots of snow in
the bush.  Accessed the S lake and checked along the shoreline finding 5
inches of ice covered with slush.  Digging through the snow and slush to
access the ice was about 6 inches and water immediately flowed in
leaving a layer of water on the ice 3-4 inches deep.  Worked our way
down, following the shoreline checking when a “dry” area was
found to stop, and the ice depth stayed at 5 inches.  Blow holes along
the route were also seen.  Made it to the landing.
Heading back home, stopped at the narrows crossing and walked onto the N
lake.  Walked out about 200 feet towards the first point, slush and dug
to the ice and found over 3 inches but less than 4 inches of ice.
Cancelled any idea of continuing up the N lake.  Went home on the W
bush trail.  Have talked to a couple of campers and their decision was
to use the back trail to the hydro lines rather than risk the slush on
the lake.  Travel by quad in the bush could be difficult with the snow.
With the forecast and snow cover, checking ice for the next few days
will be a moot point.  If I hear anything it will be posted.  IMHO,
travel on the ice is NOT recommended.
